CALL to the Cinema
We are a group of film lovers who meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays Online via Zoom to intensely discuss the best films currently showing in Calgary theatres.
Films are chosen democratically. This process often allows us to discover the best in contemporary cinema before the films are widely known.
The Soul Seekers Book Club
A Soul Seeker can be described as someone in pursuit of deeper meaning, truth, or a connection with the divine. With this in mind, we will be exploring the Inner Journey through the lens of Depth Psychology.
Depth Psychology delves into the unconscious aspects of the human psyche—seeking to uncover the hidden forces that influence our behaviours, emotions, and experiences. It encourages integration and healing through self-awareness and conscious engagement with the unconscious. This field examines how repressed or suppressed memories and patterns affect our daily lives, while offering a path toward personal growth and transformation.
Rooted in the foundational work of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler, Depth Psychology has evolved through the insights of contemporary thinkers such as James Hollis, Bud Harris, Murray Stein, Marion Woodman, James Hillman, and others.
Joy of Poetry: Discussion Group
This CALL interest group meets once a month on the second Thursday from 1-2:30 pm by Zoom. We discuss poets from all periods, ancient to the most modern. We focus on meaning, language, images, sounds and all that which makes poetry the delightful, enriching experience it is. When it is their turn to present, group members are asked to choose a favorite poet, select 6-10 of that poet’s poems and email either a PDF or link to the coordinators who will distribute it to the group. At the group meeting, we generally take turns reading the poems aloud and explore what we perceive. If there are ten of us in the group, we will each facilitate once a year.
CALL to the CPO
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra offers seniors a unique way to experience the orchestra. The CPO has open rehearsals for seniors for select performances. It is a great opportunity to see and hear how an orchestra prepares for a performance.
Readers Theatre
Readers Theatre is for those who enjoy reading aloud with expression. It requires only the voice to provide meaning to the text.
As a group, we have evolved from reading complete plays to reading scenes or short plays. This gives us the opportunity to bring our interpretation to the character and scene. Our intent is that we should all participate and have fun.
Our life stories may not have changed the course of history, but our stories shape us. We want to invite you to be part of a group interested in writing stories based on our life experiences. We will share and discuss approaches to writing our memories. What gives our stories life will be explored together.
Facilitators: Angela Swenson and Annie Caldwell
The Walrus Magazine Discussion Group

Short Reads: Great Women Writers
This CALL group is based on the idea that it is essential to hear both women’s and men’s voices. Historically, women’s voices were not valued. As Elizabeth Lesser puts it in her book Cassandra Speaks, when women’s voices are heard, the full scope of human experience is shown.
Our life stories may not have changed the course of history, but our stories shape us. We want to invite you to be part of a group interested in writing stories based on our life experiences. We will share and discuss approaches to writing our memories. What gives our stories life will be explored together. As a group we will use prompts, old pictures and special mementos to start our writing process. Some of our writing can be done in the meeting and more can be done at home between meetings. We will be sharing our writing by providing an audience for each other. We hope, through practice and encouragement, to improve our written stories.
Facilitators: Sandy Harper-Jaques; Claudette Whiting
Not So Common Law
We are going to explore the historical and social background of some of the intriguing, interesting and important legal cases which have had lasting impact on our society and affect our lives today. Each month we will have a presentation about some of these famous and fascinating cases, plus the opportunity to discuss legal current affairs. Legal issues and law cases will be based on current events and participants' interests.
How Can You Think That?
A Political Book Club
Are you frustrated by the current level of political discussion and the polarization of opinions? There must be a better way to discuss politics than what we see on the Internet and television or hear in shouting matches between people who disagree with each other.
Our political book club members are interested in bridging political divides and having intelligent, civilized conversations about why conservatives and liberals often find it hard to meet on common ground.
We are a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds and ways of thinking.
Every month, we feature a new book as our basis for discussion.
Discussion are on Zoom until further notice

Indigenous Awareness
The aim of the Indigenous Awareness Group is “kwayeskastasowin (Cree) or to “set things right.” We seek to build knowledge, awareness and understanding of Indigenous histories and world views and critically examine the implications of unconscious bias. We take responsibility for our part in co-creating “wahkohtowin,” a different and more “interconnected” future by becoming better relatives to the Land and to First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples, so all may flourish.

Tuesday Walks in the City of Calgary
Theme: Enjoy a variety of walks while engaging in conversation with fellow CALL members, discovering new pathways and observing the natural and built environment within our city.
How: A limit of 8 people including the leader will be pre-registered for each walk. To accommodate more CALL members and to provide a variety of levels of walking, leaders will provide several walks each week.
Once you have registered for this new Interest Group, you will receive the weekly offerings from which to choose and to pre-register. Offerings will be emailed to registered Interest Group members on Thursdays. The pre-registration will close on Sundays after which time the leader will confirm your place by sending the meeting place details for the walk. Registration will be on a first come first serve basis. Once a walk is “full” the leader will keep a wait list or you may chose from another unfilled walk.
Morning Walks: 10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon Everyone is asked to arrive 10 - 15 minutes prior. Please be dressed for varying winter weather conditions. As you know, Calgary weather can change at a moment's notice. Walks for the most part will be planned to travel on city pathways usually cleared, however icy spots can be unpredictable so poles and icers are a good accompaniment.
Weather cancellation policy: If Environment Canada website predicts at the start time of the walk temperature of -15 Celsius or -20 C windchill, check email for an eblast from the facilitator who will advise if the walk is cancelled.
If you enjoy word games, you might be interested in learning to play Royalty. Each TUESDAY afternoon, the Word Freaks gather to battle wits over creating words with the letters they are dealt. Not easy to make a word if you have a fistful of vowels or indeed if you have no vowels! There are some rules to learn but you will have very willing helpers as guides. We have Lots of laughs and some serious debates about whether a word is legitimate.
For those interested, we are also learning how to solve Cryptic Puzzles under the guidance of one of our members.
If you are not sure, join us on a TUESDAY and give it a try. At this time we have room for a few more members.
Open Studio
Open Studio encourages independent study of creative projects related to visual art. We meet in person and on zoom, depending upon our course of study. We have occasional in-person outings and outdoor events. Our zoom room is open every Wednesday for those who prefer to work from their studio space where materials are within easy reach. In the past we have explored creativity through the classical drawing methods and through modern approaches such as the Zentangle method and Artists Trading Cards. We select our learning interests as a group. Members offer mini tutorials and share leadership when appropriate. Some prior experience in drawing or design is helpful.
Facilitator(s): Barbara Amos, Sherryl Jeffries
Finding Peace and Joy Within
In this newest eight week session we will explore the ideas behind these ancient practices, and the modern understandings of how and why they work on both your inner and outer world. In addition, Barry will share some of what he learned from his trips to India.
Each session will include periods of meditation (sitting comfortably in chairs) to allow participants the opportunity to experience the benefits for themselves, and the opportunity to share experiences and insights with others.
All are welcome. Drop Ins are welcome.
Alberta has hundreds of thousands of abandoned, inactive, and "orphan" wells across the province. Like most other jurisdictions, it requires polluters, including oil and gas operators, to pay cleanup costs once operations cease. Unfortunately, legislation allows O&G operators to keep passing on these costs to less able entities, and most governments have not enforced their own regulations. In this half-day mini-course, Dr. David Swann and two other experts will outline the tremendous liabilities that are falling to the public and future generations, as delays hamper essential cleanup (reclamation) of inactive sites, facilities, and pipelines, blocking land development. This also places both the environment and human health at risk. There will be a short comment and discussion time.
Holiday Cafe
Join us for this special celebration of CALL talent! Music, readings and theatre.
The performances will be from 1pm until approximately 2 pm with time to mix, mingle and enjoy refreshments afterwards.
NEW THIS YEAR- come early to listen to the pre-concert music from CALL interest groups. The pre-concert show will start at approximately 12:30.

Conflict is a Participant Sport
Workshop 1
How to Conduct Your Conflict Analysis
Often, parties consider a conflict resolved but it returns the same or as a variation because the parties didn’t solve the source of the conflict.
A conflict analysis asks preliminary questions early and at every conflict stage. The conflict competency is figuring out the actual conflict to resolve.
Facilitator: Dr. Deborah Sword
Workshop 2
How to Understand Your Conflict Patterns
When parties use limited conflict styles, they fall into conflict patterns, which harden the conflict script, and shorten the time between the trigger and the conflict’s start.
Conflict patterns are a changeable mindset. The conflict competency is figuring out what will and how to rewrite the conflict script.
Workshop 3
How to Interpret Your Conflict Mental Map
Maps change over time, like the British Empire was once pink on the Mercator projection. Your unique conflict mental map evolves over time, adapting with your beliefs and feelings about the ‘right’ way to do conflict.
The conflict competency is figuring out the landscapes you have to navigate on your own (and your opponent’s) conflict mental maps.
