Being Bertha - How a Wayward Woman Became a Local Legend
Fran Genereux will talk about her book Being Bertha - How a Wayward Woman Became a Local Legend. This is the life story of Bertha Ekelund (Marshall), Fran’s great aunt, collected from letters, photos, family stories and historical records. Bertha lived her life on her own terms making decisions both good and bad, often with unexpected consequences. Fran will describe Bertha’s journey which included a childhood of tragedy and poverty in southern Alberta, a job in Portland Oregon during the roaring 20’s and the great depression, a career as a nurse at Los Gatos, California, as well as a year at the Fort Saskatchewan penitentiary. Anyone familiar with the popular Bertha Lake hiking trail in Waterton Lakes National Park has already been introduced to Bertha.
