The purpose of this group is to explore the phenomenon of the relatively small number of recognized women philosophers in the history of western philosophy. Various theories about the causes and significance of this phenomenon will be discussed. We will research the biographies and contributions of women philosophers, considering figures of ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary times.

The women discussed will include Diotima, Hipparchia, Hypatia; Heloise, Julian of Norwich, Hildegard von Bingen, Christine de Pizan; Elizabeth of Bohemia, Anne Conway, Mary Astell, Sophie Condorcet; Mary Wollstonecraft, Harriet Taylor Miill, Simone Weil, Edith Stein, Simone de Beauvoir, Susan Stebbing, Susan Moller Okin, and Martha Nussbaum.

Participants will contribute by doing internet research prior to each meeting and sharing their results as a basis for discussion.
