Yellow Beam Purple Spill

Julie Beugin, Artist

Julie Beugin makes abstract paintings based on the everyday landscapes of the city. She begins with photographic collages of quiet spaces in the city, overlapping fragments such as manicured hedges, concrete columns, or a view into an empty office. In her paintings, these photographic sources are radically transformed into abstractions of colour and gesture that interweave into a puzzling sense of flux. Works feed into each other in an ongoing transformative ecosystem as canvas cut outs from unsuccessful paintings are adhered onto new surfaces. Surreal spills hover and float, and new spaces appear to continually unfold.

Beugin completed her BFA at Emily Carr University (2004) and her MFA at Concordia University (2008). Her MFA thesis exhibition was held at Optica centre d’art contemporain in Montréal. Beugin was shortlisted for the RBC painting competition in 2009 and is the recipient of grants from the BC Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. She was a Visiting Artist at NSCAD University in 2014, and has had solo and group exhibitions across Canada and in Berlin, Germany.

This event is open to guests as well as CALL members, and there’s no need to pre-register. So bring your friends, and let’s give Julie a warm welcome home.
