WOMEN IN THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY      Fall 2017

There are lots of women within the western traditions of philosophy – it’s just that you probably never heard of them. In the past, philosophically active women were also nuns, mystics, administrators, scientists, novelists, and playwrights. We will explore the social contexts, biographies, and contributions of women philosophers, considering figures from ancient Greece, Renaissance and early modern Europe, seventeenth century Mexico, twentieth century France and Britain, and contemporary America. The women discussed will include Hildegard von Bingen, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, Mary Wollstonecraft, Simone de Beauvoir, and Martha Nussbaum. (There are many intriguing others.) Participants will contribute by doing internet research prior to each meeting and sharing their results as a basis for discussion. Men and women are welcome.

Facilitators: Trudy Govier and Lorna Jamison
