TT Magic of the Galapagos Islands Wednesday, November 22, 2023 |
Originally called the Enchanted Isles, the Galapagos Islands were my dream destination for many years. The 19 islands lie across the equator in the Pacific Ocean, 1100 km west of the mother country, Ecuador, and stretch over a 320 km axis from east to west. I knew about Darwin’s theory that species were not “unchangeable” but evolved through natural selection, adaptation to the environment and genetic mutation. And because of the island environment, unique flora and fauna had evolved in isolation. I wanted to see the tortoises, the Blue Footed Boobies and other special creatures. I first visited the islands in 2010 and after my return home felt the desire to return with my sons and share the magic. I was aware that human factors and a changing physical environment are changing life on the islands – they should see the Enchanted Isles before it was too late. I literally won the lottery and had the opportunity to share this special place with my family in 2022. |
