Winnifred Eaton Reeve:
A Celebrity Novelist in Early Calgary
A century ago, the novelist Onoto Watanna (aka Winnifred Eaton Reeve) traded her life in New York City as a celebrated writer to become an Alberta rancher. Here, she reinvented herself as a Canadian writer and helped put Calgary on the national literary map. Her years in the city read like a novel. Author and historian Shaun Hunter gives us a glimpse into the life and Calgary geography of this charismatic, captivating and complex Asian North American writer.
Speaker's Bio:
Shaun Hunter is a Calgary writer, reader and public historian passionate about the city’s literary landscape. Her 2018 book Calgary Through the Eyes of Writers (Rocky Mountain Books) offers a journey around Calgary, from its frontier beginnings to today’s contemporary city. During her term as Historian in Residence at the Calgary Public Library in 2020, she created a digital literary map of Calgary now marking over 600 sites. Other projects include a literary history exhibit at Calgary’s Lougheed House, a 1920s map with the Calgary Atlas Project, articles for Read Alberta, guided walks, and presentations.
