CC -- The Calgary Atlas Project

Monday, May 1, 2023

What are the stories that maps can tell? How do they do this?

The May Café will feature three speakers with different perspectives on the Calgary Atlas Project. An initiative of the Calgary Institute for the Humanities, the project is producing a series of maps, nine completed so far, that document lesser-known histories of Calgary. Jim Ellis, Director of the Institute, will introduce the goals of the project and how it depends on local writers who identify 30-40 sites related to a particular history, and a local artist who then interprets that history as a map. Shelley Alexander and Rita McKeough, two of the creators of the latest map in the series, The Animals Guide to Calgary, will then provide their perspective on this collaborative process.
