Calgary artists were asked to create a response to the pandemic, called Six Feet Closer YYC. This image is a detail of the submission by the Creative Projects interest group.
Barbara Amos, Facilitator, Creative Projects
When the pandemic moved us into lockdown in March, the Creative Projects group moved onto the Zoom platform. This group was interactive, rather than lecture or discussion based, and we worked together to transfer this learning model onto Zoom. We decided to draw each other during our Zoom meetings, find a way for immediate responses, and shared learning. The image at the top shows some of the contour drawings that we did of each other. Most were done in 3-5 minutes. Some of them are blind contours, meaning that the drawing was done without looking at the page, looking only at the Zoom screen. A selection of our drawings were assembled on a 6 foot long page, a reference to social distancing, and submitted. All submissions will be at an exhibition space to be announced in 2021. Follow the project on instagram @"6FtCloserYYC".
By Lorraine Smith, CALL President
On a snowy October morning, 53 hardy CALL members ventured out to … log on their computers! The first ever AGM by Zoom did not disappoint. Ably hosted by Linda Flanagan, members were able to cast votes on several motions with the click of a mouse. Excellent reports were given by Ron Foyer, outgoing President, and Cathy Martin, incoming Treasurer. It was wonderful to look back to the early days of CALL … and marvel at how quickly the organization has “pivoted” in these strange COVID times. Although membership is down slightly, we are hopeful that with this last reminder to renew, we will continue to be in a good financial position. The meeting ended with the ratifying of a full slate of officers, presented by Barb Murray, Governance, and the asking of a few thoughtful questions.
Despite so much that is unknown about the months ahead, it is reassuring to know that the CALL community continues to thrive. It is a time for new ideas and methods of meeting and learning. It is time for Carpe Diem!

You may remember Madeleine King from her years as a Calgary Alderman, or as a community activist. Whatever your memories, you’re in for a surprise when you read Madeleine’s recent memoir! It’s called “Expulsion” because as a teenager in Switzerland she was expelled from boarding school. That’s just one of the many intimate stories recounted in this lively and fascinating book.
Join us for an hour of conversation and a reading as we learn more about this multi-talented Calgarian.
