Film Noir Classic Cinema Series

This is a 7-part series of Film Noir classics from the 1940s and 1950s.

This is an opportunity to view some famous films, including Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon and The Lady from Shanghai. Film Noir is an American genre that encompasses a range of plots: the central figure may be a private investigator (The Big Sleep), a plainclothes policeman (The Big Heat), an aging boxer (The Set-Up), a hapless grifter (Night and the City), a law-abiding citizen lured into a life of crime (Gun Crazy), or simply a victim of circumstance (D.O.A.). Beginning in the early 1940s, numerous screenplays inspired by hardboiled American crime fiction were brought to the screen, primarily by European √©migr√© directors who shared a certain storytelling sensibility: highly stylized, overtly theatrical, with imagery often drawn from an earlier era of German “expressionist” cinema. Fritz Lang, Robert Siodmak, Billy Wilder, and Otto Preminger, among others, were among this Hollywood vanguard.

The Interest group now has a minimum registration and will go ahead.  Other registrants are most welcome.  The films will be advertised on the theatre’s website, film listings, and marquee so that the general public will be able to attend.

Members will have to pay theatre admission, which is $5. There will be a 5 minute introduction to each film plus a 15 minute audience Q&A after each film.
