Truth and Beauty in the Canadian Rockies: Exploring the Art of Walter J Phillips

Join author Lisa Christensen as she discusses the fourth book in her award-winning series of titles that explore the art of the Canadian Rockies. Christensen will expand on the life of watercolourist and master printmaker Walter J Phillips, take you to some of the trails that he followed through a visual presentation, and share stories of his life, his writings, and his art. Phillips’s unique methodology has resulted in remarkable works with a depth and clarity rarely seen in watercolour in Canada. His appreciation for beauty further layers these works with enduring appeal. Join her as she explores his mountain art.

Lisa Christensen has worked in the art world for over thirty years, holding the positions of Corporate Curator, TC Energy, Director, Calgary Office, for Heffel Fine Art Auction House, Associate Curator of Art, Glenbow Museum, and Curator of Art at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, in addition to freelance curatorial and corporate work for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Art Gallery of Alberta. She has served on the Board of the Alberta Museums Association, the Art Advisory Council of Calgary’s Military Museums and the Board of the Leighton Art Centre. She is a graduate of the University of Calgary and is the author of three award-winning books on Canadian art history: A Hiker’s Guide to Art of the Canadian Rockies, A Hiker’s Guide to the Rocky Mountain Art of Lawren Harris, and The Lake O’Hara Art of J.E.H. MacDonald and Hiker’s Guide. Her fourth book in this series, Truth and Beauty in the Canadian Rockies: An Explorer’s Guide to the Art of Walter J. Phillips, was published in August. Lisa is an accomplished public speaker, having lectured and presented on the subject of Canadian art at the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto, the University of Alberta, the University of Lethbridge as well as the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Alberta and many other public and commercial art galleries.

Lisa possesses a broad knowledge of Canadian art and a unique knowledge particular to the art of Canada’s West and the Rocky Mountains.
