2 p.m. – “ALMOST A GREAT ESCAPE”
In his new book, ALMOST A GREAT ESCAPE, Calgary writer Tyler Trafford tells of his discovery of an album of love letters written to his mother, Alice Tyler, by the Norwegian fighter pilot Jens Muller. The fascinating true story begins when the Calgary writer inherited a Campbell’s Soup box filled with his late mother’s letters after her funeral in Calgary in 2004. The old letters and photos revealed his mother’s secret relationship, one doomed by social class and circumstance in Montreal during World War Two. Taken prisoner by the Germans after his Spitfire was shot down over the English Channel, Muller later was one of the three prisoners who escaped alive from the notorious Nazi prison of war camp STALAG LUFT III, a breakout chronicled in the 1963 classic film, THE GREAT ESCAPE. Tyler will share his mother’s and Jen Muller’s story (and its aftermath) at the CALL Café.
